What is insomnia?

Defining insomnia is difficult. Sleep does not always have to be perfect, and everyone sometimes experiences temporary insomnia.

Insomnia is characterized by the following: difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep and waking up often during the night. Some feature of insomnia may occur alone, or some person may have all these problems. Insomnia can occur for many reasons. People’s experiences are individual, but usually sleepless people feel the amount of sleep too low or the quality of sleep poor (or both together). The effects of a poorly slept night are felt throughout the day and affect daytime activities.

Insomnia is often also classified as primary or secondary. The most common form of primary insomnia is psychophysiological or functional insomnia. It is often formed as a result of tension, anxiety and sleep-inhibiting thoughts or activities. Functional insomnia can occur so that at first a person has a so-called “normal insomnia” as a result of some change, life crises or stress. When insomnia continues for a long time, even though the changed phase of life has already passed, there still may be a problem with falling asleep and going to bed. Secondary insomnia is again due to a physical or mental illness or medication.
